Here is what he said, and why it matters. 🧵👇 🔥 It started with Jacob Rees-Mogg. The British aristocrat and former minister suggested that Britons who oppose the war should be locked up, and that dying fighting Russia is their duty. Mercouris noted the reaction: it went down very badly. Because everyone could see that Rees-Mogg, in his tailored suit and refined accent, is not the one who will face the battlefield. The disconnect is not just political. It is visceral. 📉 Mercouris is blunt: the European elites have pursued this policy of pushing Russia for 30 years. Now they sense the whole strategy is bankrupt. So they panic. They talk about war. They talk about militaries. But the militaries are in no condition to fight Russia. The peoples of Europe do not believe in the Russian threat and do not want war. And if you reject the only serious option — real negotiations, not sham negotiations — then what is left? You frighten your own populations and press down on them even harder. As Slovak PM Fico said: they provoke war to distract from domestic failures. 🧠 Mercouris goes further: we may have left behind the time of political analysis. Psychology now explains the situation better. When times get hard, you can either compromise or escalate. They are escalating because admitting the policy failed would mean admitting they were wrong for 30 years. ❄️ And winter is coming. The Saudis are reportedly stopping oil exports to Europe. The Americans are talking about banning diesel exports — and diesel is already in short supply. European gas reserves are very low. If the Russians continue their advance, if Ukraine faces a major military crisis, if the economy collapses — all at the same time — then some will say: we must go for broke. We must intervene directly. No-fly zones. Troops in western Ukraine. These voices exist, especially in London. They are reckless. But they are there. 💣 Mercouris dismantles the fantasy of escalation control. Macron says Russia has no right to object if European troops go to Ukraine. But what happens if they do object? The assumption that mere European presence will frighten Russia is absurd. If the United States cannot achieve air supremacy over Iran, how can Europe achieve it over Russia? A no-fly zone over Ukraine is not a strategy. It is a suicide pact. 🗺️ On the battlefield, Mercouris says the war is cracking. The Donbass has been a war of sieges — one fortified town after another. That phase is ending. The last line — the Sloviansk-Kramatorsk strip — is crumbling on its flanks. Once it falls, the entire dynamic changes. It will revert to a war of maneuver. He is skeptical that drones have made large movements impossible. Technology evolves. Russia is developing answers. 🎯 Dobropillya matters because it is the western edge of the Donbass. If it falls, there are no big towns nearby for the Ukrainians to retreat to. Open fields for tens of kilometers. The Russians could then advance north and cut off the supply lines to Kramatorsk and Sloviansk from the west — a strategic encirclement of the remaining Ukrainian forces in Donbass. The Ukrainians are clinging on. Logically, they should be planning a retreat. But they are not. ⚠️ And here is the trap. The West may be waiting for Russia to take Donbas by force before making a diplomatic pitch. Mercouris says that is reckless. By that point, Russia will be in an extraordinarily strong position. Its demands will increase. It will want Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. If not, Sumy. Ukraine will have thrown away its major card. The time to negotiate is now — but the West refuses. 🗳️ The only way out, Mercouris suggests, is political change in Europe. Some current leaders must go. New leaders, less implicated in the disaster, must take their place. Then diplomacy can begin.
