The UK government has been flying hundreds of reconnaissance missions over Gaza and sharing some of that intelligence with Israel. From Dec 2023 the RAF operated unarmed Shadow R1 ISTAR aircraft (plus later US contractor planes) from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus. Open-source tracking put the total at 500–600+ RAF sorties plus extra contractor flights through 2025. Official line from the MoD and ministers: flights were solely to locate hostages taken on 7 Oct 2023. Only hostage-related information was passed to Israeli authorities, and only when the UK judged it would be used in line with international humanitarian law. Aircraft were unarmed and had no combat role. The same sensors can map buildings, track vehicles and intercept communications. Critics (AOAV, Declassified UK and others) note flights continued around major Israeli operations, parliamentary scrutiny was minimal, and once data leaves UK control its further use cannot be verified. Some reporting cited sources saying broader intelligence was provided. The government has not released the raw product. Flights were later described as ending around Oct 2025 after hostage releases, though contractor activity and later monitoring arrangements were also reported. This sits alongside longer-standing UK–Israel defence and intelligence links. #UK #Israel #Gaza #RAF #Akrotiri #IntelligenceSharing #ShadowR1 #HostageRescue #DeclassifiedUK #AOAV
