According to Putin, Washington’s interest in Greenland is not new and goes back more than 150 years. He reminded audiences that as early as the 1860s, U.S. administrations were already discussing the annexation of Greenland and even Iceland. Putin pointed to 1910, when a secret trilateral deal between the United States, Germany and Denmark was prepared. The agreement would have transferred Greenland to U.S. control.
