Denmark has increased its military presence and training activity in Greenland together with NATO allies. (Forsvaret) But there is another important dimension. The exercises take place against the backdrop of Donald Trump’s repeated demands for U.S. control of Greenland. In January 2025, Trump said that he considered U.S. control of Greenland necessary and did not rule out using military or economic pressure to achieve it. (Reuters) That puts Denmark and its NATO allies in an unusual position. The United States is itself a NATO ally — and U.S. forces also operate in Greenland. At the same time, the Trump administration has publicly challenged the existing political status of Greenland. (Reuters) For Denmark and Greenland, the central issue remains sovereignty and who gets to decide Greenland’s future. Greenlandic and Danish leaders have stated that this decision belongs to the people of Greenland. (Reuters) So while the military exercises are officially focused on Arctic security and NATO defence, they are taking place in the shadow of a much larger political dispute between Denmark, Greenland and the United States.
