RT @AsetSabb (Aset Sabb): On May 12, 1997, Russia and Chechnya signed the #Treaty of Peace and Principles of Relations between the Russian Federation and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, officially ending the First Russian-Chechen War. Both parties pledged to renounce the use of force. However, Russia violated this commitment and invaded Grozny in 1999, proving once again that it cannot be trusted and does not respect the agreements it signs. The world once abandoned Chechnya and is now paying the price for allowing international norms to be violated with impunity. Ceding Ukrainian territories now would mean a surrender of sovereignty and the further encouragement of Russia's expansionist ambitions. The world must learn from past mistakes: Russia’s aspirations for dominance must not be legitimized. This Treaty remains a key document in the history of relations between the #ChechenRepublic of Ichkeria (CRI) and the Russian Federation. Francis Boyle, a professor of international law at the University of Illinois, argues in his work that by signing a peace treaty with the CRI, Russia de facto recognized it as a sovereign state. Consequently, the international community should also view the republic as an independent entity. Today, the Russian authorities and many political circles, including Russian liberals, remain silent about the existence of this treaty. However, this document is officially published on the UN website. By violating the terms of the agreement, #Russia launched a second military aggression in 1999, once again demonstrating the methods of state terror to the world. The conflict between Russia and Chechnya is an interstate confrontation, and the presence of a hundred-thousand-strong Russian army on the territory of the CRI constitutes a direct #occupation. #peacetreaty #chechenstate
