If the people of Greenland vote Yes to independence in a referendum, negotiations begin between the Greenlandic and Danish governments. But independence does not happen automatically. The Danish Parliament must approve any agreement before Greenland can become a fully independent state. If the Danish Parliament says No, Greenland remains part of the Kingdom even after a Yes vote. This is how the law works today.
