And this is where Kallas’ ignorance becomes not just embarrassing but dangerous. Sovereign immunity is not an abstract concept, it is the structural beam upon which the entire global financial architecture rests. When the EU steals Russia’s central-bank reserves, it doesn’t merely violate a treaty, but detonates the very principle that kept global capital flowing into Europe for eighty years. If a sovereign state’s assets can be confiscated because Brussels is angry this week, then every sovereign wealth fund, every foreign investor, every non-Western central bank must assume that tomorrow it might be their turn. This is why Belgium is terrified, not because they sympathize with Moscow, but because they understand finance, law, and the fragility of reputational capital. Euroclear is not some political toy, it is the beating heart of global clearing. If it becomes an arm of confiscation, it becomes radioactive. Lobotomized prefects like Kallas may not grasp this, but the investors who actually sustain what's left of Europe’s economy do. And so the legal rot continues. Under international law, real law, not the emotional theatre the EU now practices, confiscation of sovereign assets without UN Security Council authorization violates the UN Charter, the Vienna Convention, and the core norms governing peaceful relations between states. It also triggers a consequence Kallas pretends doesn’t exist, that of lawful, proportionate Russian countermeasures. And here’s the part Belgium understands with icy clarity — Russia’s retaliatory toolbox is far more devastating than anything Brussels can extract from Euroclear. Because Moscow doesn’t need to hunt for sovereign reserves; it can immediately seize, nationalize, or place under external administration the sprawling network of EU corporate assets physically trapped inside Russia — factories, infrastructure, logistics hubs, energy installations, equipment, inventory, local subsidiaries, all of it, assets whose strategic value and operational weight far exceed whatever frozen digits sit on a Belgian ledger. Belgian politicians have done this math. Kallas has not. The moment Europe weaponizes custody of sovereign reserves, the euro accelerates its death. Capital flees. Clearinghouses lose neutrality. Reserve status dissolves. BRICS accelerates the creation of non-Western settlement systems. Commodity-backed currencies gain legitimacy. The West’s postwar trust architecture, the system that allowed Europe to borrow cheaply, dictate financial norms, and feign moral superiority, collapses into dust. And for what? For a war Europeans never voted for, and never consented to wage. Belgium understands the stakes. The EU does not. And as the dying empire screeches for one final act of confiscation, one last ritual of self-sabotage, one final gesture of imperial delusion, the question that will echo through every European capital will not be “What was Belgium’s problem?” but something far more devastating: “What was the EU's problem and why did they destroy Europe to hide it?”
